|"Vintage high heels collector, David Childs, steps through the past 100 years of heel history. Childs has 'a fascination' for the aesthetic appeal of high heels, and has turned his passion into a museum exhibit of 600 pairs of shoes. (And that's just half his collection.) The heels will be on display at the Yakima Valley Museum for the rest of this year." Video by T.J. Mullinax, Yakima Herald Republic.|
David Childs' interest in high-heeled shoes began at the age of four or five when he and his brother raided their mother's closet and discovered that wearing her heels, they could make a great noise on the hardwood floor. His first collection of high heels consisted of paper ones, pictures cut from the pages of Montgomery Ward's catalogs and stored in an El Roi-Tan cigar box. During Childs' college days in California, he acquired a job in a newly opened family shoe store. His experience from this store helped him secure a second shoe job in Waterloo, Iowa in the late 1960s. It was during that time that he became interested in researching the subject of shoes and collecting a few vintage high heels. In 1969 he moved to Yakima, where he continued selling women's shoes. He continued to research and acquire catalogs, shoe ads, vintage books and examples of fine high heels.
Childs' shoe collection focuses on two broad categories: Very fine, small sizes of high-quality heels that were typically worn by well-dressed women over the last century; and a few examples of unusual or trendy special occasion high heels. The collection now numbers about a thousand pairs. Approximately 600 pairs will be on display in this exhibition.
Head over Heels over Heels includes shoes from the late 1800s until the present. Styles include ankle-strap platform shoes, popular in the late 1940s, and stilettos of the mid 1950s. Visitors to the exhibit will enjoy viewing examples of short-lived fads such as clear Lucite shoes and Corfam. Many designer's works are also included, such as Manolo Blahnik, and Beleganti.
