Part of Yakima’s heritage is the music and literature from the homelands of the various people who, over the years, have come from other places to the Yakima Valley. Tonight we will feature music and word from the British Isles—England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.

The Hit Parade
The Hit Parade, sponsored by Lucky Strike Cigarettes, was an American institution during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, first on radio and then on network television. The top popular songs of the 1950s will be performed in the style of the television version of the show during an evening that will be both nostalgic and loads of fun.

Right Here in Yakima
Beginning with the opening of the Opera House in 1889, Yakima has hosted a wide variety of classical performers who made one of the theatres of Yakima a stop on their tours of the Pacific Northwest. Performances by some of these top classical musicians, such as Madame Schumann-Heink, from the 1880s through the 1930s will be presented in a concert format.

When Drawing Room Diversions was established in January, 2000, the intention was to re-create live musical performances in a Yakima family parlor. But, the Yakima Valley has always offered other types of musical entertainment as well, and, to better reflect this, the Yakima Valley Museum and the Yakima Symphony Orchestra are pleased to announce that the scope of Drawing Room Diversions will be expanded for its fourth season.

As in past years, the programs will feature a mixture of history and song, based on a single theme and presented in an intimate, homelike setting in the Bill & Suzanne Doyle Center Court of the museum’s Great Hall. Now, however, Diversions will tell of the opportunities Yakima Valley residents had to experience music in the community, in addition to the musical amusements they created for themselves at home.

A light supper, wine and non-alcoholic beverages, and a scrumptious dessert will precede each program. Since seating is not assigned, this year we will strictly adhere to our policy of not opening the doors until 6 P.M. The new Jewett Entrance Gallery will be open, so that you need not stand outside in the cold, but the doors to the Great Hall will not be unlocked until 6 P.M.
