Dark Blue Velvet Dress
1885
Gift of Mrs. Harold Hambelton

This was the second day dress of Mrs. Henry Abbott, mother of the donor. It features carnival glass beading and a waterfall bustle. A hat to complete the ensemble might well have featured such a stuffed real bird as a parrot, lovebird, finch, blackbird, or pigeon.

A "second day" dress was worn the day after the wedding. This dress, as many of the wedding dresses, became a "best dress."
