Stepping Out
Peach-Colored Hobble Skirt Dress
1913
Gift of Mrs. W. A. Hall
In March 1911, The Delineator, a popular fashion magazine
of the period, stated. "The length of sleeves begins at
the shoulder and ends at the wrist. You can wear them where you
like, but not when you like. Long sleeves belong to morning,
3/4 length sleeves to afternoon, but a sleeve that doesn't reach
the elbow is used only for evening purposes."
Dresses were accented with maribou (ostrich) or swan's down.
A hobble dress was pulled in at the ankles. This ostrich feather
trimmed dress was worn by Mrs. Logan Roberts, mother of donor.
