Stepping Out

Clothing intended for evening social or cultural events is usually the height of fashion. Even if there can be only one "stepping out" piece in the household's wardrobe, it is likely to be the most elaborate piece the owner can afford. Until World War II dictated a simpler, more informal set of rules for evening wear, there were strict fashion codes dictating the length, color, and appropriate accessories that were to be worn in public. Prior to 1918, for example, sleeveless or short-sleeve dresses were considered scandalous before sunset.
