The Yakima Valley Museum has an extensive collection of American Indian cultural objects.
There are over 3,000 American Indian objects in the museum's collections. They come from tribes representing all the major cultural regions of North America. Some types of artifacts are especially well represented; we have 185 pieces of pottery,200 beaded bags, 264 items of clothing, and 480 examples of basketry.
Most of the American Indian objects in our collection come from
the Yakama and other tribes of the inland Northwest's Plateau region. This is in keeping with the museum's mission of collecting and preserving objects related to the history of the Yakima Valley and south central Washington State. However, we also have many items from other American Indian groups; these objects from other cultures are useful for studying the similarities and differences between them and the Plateau tribes.
